At Barons Court Primary School and Nursery it is our aim to develop enthusiastic and confident readers who read for interest, information and enjoyment. We use a range of different strategies to support reading within our school.
Phase 1 and 2
Reading opportunities are provided on a daily basis. A wide range of approaches are used to provide first hand experiences for the children. The children are taught in a stimulating environment that is rich in written print. The teachers share books with the class and regularly read stories and rhymes. Phonics is taught daily and follows the Read, Write, Inc scheme (a systematic synthetic multi-sensory approach). The children are given an individual reading book to take home to support their PACT work. This includes children in the Nursery. The teacher reads with the child and encourages reading to take place at home.
Phonics sessions continue to take place during the week following the Read, Write, Inc Scheme. During shared and guided reading, phonics work is reinforced in the context of real texts. Writing activities follow on from shared reading with a balance of reading and writing. Children are heard individually read with an adult once a week. It is expected that parents also hear their children read at least 3 times a week at least and sign in their reading record books. Children change their reading books once they have discussed the text to check for understanding with an adult at school. Children also participate in daily guided reading sessions.
Children participate in daily guided reading and phonic sessions following the Read, Write Inc Scheme to deepen children’s inferential, retrieval and decoding skills. Children are placed into similar ability groups which are reviewed on a regular basis. The text chosen for a given guided reading session will challenge the group in terms of meaning and word difficulty. The text chosen will ideally always link to the current unit theme. There is a balance of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts chosen for guided reading sessions over a half-term period. Children also have the opportunity to independently read and when a child has finished reading a book, they will talk it through with an adult. Children select their own text from the selection available at their level., which also include e-books. Selecting their own choice of texts is an important part of developing independence. Selecting texts motivates readers and helps children to develop and discuss their reading preferences.
'Spring into Stories' and 'Sunshine and Stories'
Throughout the school year we open our library and school reading facilities so that our pupils and our wider community can enjoy reading all year round! This year we welcomed 185 children and families to our different events within the summer as we participated in the Summer Read Project.
We have welcomed a number of different children authors at our community events and we look forward to our next reading sessions in both the Spring and Summer holidays.

We are proud of our library where the children can enjoy a wide selection of books. We also hold the Summer Read project within the school. Your child can choose a number of books from your local public library. No child is too young to join and they are completely free.
